Ohanaeze Leader Urges FG to Free Nnamdi Kanu for Medical Care

The President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta-Mbata, has called on the Federal Government to release Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), to allow him access to urgent medical treatment.

In a video message shared with journalists on Thursday, Azuta-Mbata emphasized that Kanu’s continued detention serves no purpose and urged the government to seek a political resolution.

“There’s no benefit in holding Kanu further,” Azuta-Mbata stated. “The government should prioritize his health and safety by allowing him to receive medical care immediately. A political approach is the best way to resolve this issue.”

Kanu, first arrested in 2015 on charges including treasonable felony, fled Nigeria in 2017 after jumping bail. He was controversially rearrested in Kenya in June 2021 and has since been held by the Department of State Services (DSS).

His detention remains a deeply polarizing issue, sparking debates among political leaders, community groups, and human rights advocates who call for dialogue to address the matter.

In the same message, Azuta-Mbata encouraged Igbo communities across Nigeria to participate actively in the ongoing voter registration exercise. “I urge all Igbos, wherever you are, to seize this opportunity and register to vote. Get your voter cards now,” he said.

The plea for Kanu’s release and the call for voter participation come amid growing discussions about political solutions to Nigeria’s security and social challenges.
