Lagos Woman, 63, Welcomes Twin Boys After Four Decades of Waiting

A 63-year-old Lagos woman, Mrs Janet Ajibola, has shared the story of how she became a mother for the first time after more than 40 years of marriage, delivering twin boys without any form of assisted reproductive technology.

Mrs Ajibola, who will turn 63 on 17 December this year, said she gave birth to the twins on 3 October 2025, describing the experience as a fulfilment of a long-held hope. She explained that although this was her first successful delivery, it was not her first pregnancy.

A retired teacher from the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mrs Ajibola now works as an evangelist and midwife. She has been married for over four decades and will mark her 41st wedding anniversary in February 2026.

She recalled that for years, her pregnancies ended with repeated medical reports indicating the absence of a foetus. According to her, doctors often found fibroids instead, leading to surgeries in 2009 and 2013. Despite medical interventions and several attempts at pregnancy, she said scans consistently failed to confirm conception.

Mrs Ajibola noted that earlier this year, she received differing assessments from various caregivers, including one who confirmed she was pregnant but could not be reached again. Another prescribed routine pregnancy medication and immune boosters in higher doses before also becoming unreachable.

Her breakthrough came when she was introduced to another health worker who confirmed she was carrying twins and was due for delivery. She said she prepared herself and eventually delivered the babies naturally on 3 October.

She explained that her pregnancy was not outwardly obvious, as her stomach grew only slightly, making it difficult for people to recognise her condition. Despite conflicting scan results, she said she felt movement throughout the pregnancy.

Reflecting on the many pregnancies she lost over the years, Mrs Ajibola said she could no longer recall the exact number, but remembered several ending due to complications linked to fibroids. She said she remained prayerful and hopeful until she finally became a mother.

Mrs Ajibola described the birth of her sons as a testament to perseverance and faith after decades of waiting.
