US Faces Crucial Decision Over Iran Response as Protests Escalate

As unrest grows in Iran, the pressure is mounting on President Trump to decide the US’s next move. Ten days ago, Trump vowed to come to the aid of Iranian protesters if the government resorted to violence, saying the US was “locked and loaded” and ready to act.

That was before the full extent of Iran’s brutal crackdown began to unfold. Now, with reports detailing the shocking scale of the violence, the world is waiting to see how the president will respond.

“Nobody knows what President Trump is going to do except for President Trump,” White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Monday. “The world can keep waiting and guessing.”

But how much longer will the world have to wait?

Senior officials are set to brief the president on Tuesday regarding possible courses of action. Trump has already hinted at considering “some very strong options,” but exactly what these options might involve remains unclear.

Flushed with success following the capture of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, Trump may be tempted to take more aggressive action. His administration has previously shown it is capable of conducting military operations from afar, as evidenced by B-2 stealth bombers dropping bunker-busting bombs on Iranian nuclear sites in recent months.

If the US were to escalate its involvement, options might include airstrikes or more targeted attacks on Iran’s military infrastructure, potentially aimed at those responsible for the violent repression of protesters.

However, experts caution that military action could have unintended consequences. Iran’s leaders are battle-hardened, and the country has a significant arsenal of ballistic missiles. The possibility of retaliation remains high, and Trump’s recent comments about the 1980 US hostage crisis in Iran show he is mindful of the risks involved.

“The disaster of 1980 was significant,” Trump remarked recently, referencing the botched rescue attempt in which eight American servicemen died. The failure, combined with the humiliation of American hostages being paraded on Iranian television, played a major role in President Jimmy Carter’s loss in the 1980 election.

“I don’t know that he would have won the election,” Trump said, “but he certainly had no chance after that disaster.”

Despite the temptation to act decisively, the Trump administration’s ultimate goal in Iran remains unclear. Experts suggest that, rather than pursuing regime change, the president may be focused on influencing Iran’s behaviour, particularly when it comes to its nuclear programme.
