Court Orders Activist to Remove Defamatory Posts on Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an injunction preventing UK-based activist Dr. Sandra Duru, known as Prof Mgbeke, from posting defamatory content about Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan on social media.

The court, in a ruling on January 24, 2026, granted the senator’s request for protection, citing concerns over potential irreparable damage to her reputation. Dr. Duru is also prohibited from sharing, posting, or disseminating any material that could harm the senator’s image pending the resolution of the case.

This ruling followed the release of the Certified True Copies of tax reform Acts by the National Assembly Clerk. The senator had sought judicial intervention after alleging that Duru had launched a campaign of cyberbullying, which involved multiple defamatory posts between May and October 2025.

Justice I. Mohammed, who presided over the case, ordered that Meta Platforms (Facebook’s parent company) must remove any posts made by Dr. Duru that were found to be defamatory. The court also instructed Meta to preserve all related electronic evidence to aid in the determination of the case.

The ruling further emphasised that the concerns raised by Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan over the defamatory posts had to be addressed urgently to prevent lasting damage. The senator had previously claimed that the posts went viral, leading to online harassment, hostility, and emotional trauma.

In response to the ruling, Dr. Duru’s legal team had no immediate comment on the matter. The case is ongoing, and the court will consider further actions to ensure the senator’s reputation is protected.

The decision has sparked mixed reactions, with some supporting the senator’s efforts to address online harassment and others raising concerns over freedom of speech and the power of social media platforms.
