Tinubu Visits Jos After Deadly Attack

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected in Jos on Thursday following a deadly attack that left 28 people dead and 22 others injured.

The visit comes as calm gradually returns to the city after tensions escalated earlier in the week. Security has since been reinforced across affected areas.

The President is expected to assess the situation on the ground and show support to victims of the violence.

He had earlier met with Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where discussions focused on the security challenges in the state.

In a statement issued by his spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu condemned the killings in Jos as well as a separate attack in Kahir village in Kaduna State, where wedding guests were reportedly killed and abducted.

The President described the attackers as “heartless cowards” and directed security agencies to intensify efforts to track down those responsible. He also cautioned against portraying the violence as religiously driven, warning that such narratives could further inflame tensions.

The attack in Jos occurred on Sunday evening near the Anguwan Rukuba junction, where gunmen reportedly opened fire on residents.

In the aftermath, some youths blocked major roads in protest, raising fears of further unrest.

The incident followed earlier violence in the state, including an ambush in Kanam Local Government Area where more than 20 security personnel and vigilantes were reportedly killed.

The deteriorating security situation also disrupted academic activities at the University of Jos, which postponed examinations and ordered students to vacate hostels as a precaution.

According to a statement by the institution’s Deputy Registrar, Emmanuel Madugu, the decision was taken due to rising tension in areas surrounding the university. Vice-Chancellor Tanko Ishaya approved the evacuation to safeguard students.

The Plateau State Government facilitated the evacuation by providing transport services, including movement during curfew hours.

Residents have been urged to remain vigilant as authorities continue efforts to restore lasting peace in the state.
