Shadow Over Sapele: Community in Shock Following Brazen Abduction of Council Boss
SAPELE — The rhythmic evening pulse of Sapele was shattered Friday night by a calculated, high-stakes kidnapping that has left the local government area on edge.
At approximately 7:00 p.m., as the weekend began to settle in, a commando-style operation unfolded along Owumi Road. Armed gunmen, estimated to be around 15 in number, stormed a local hotel in a coordinated strike that witnesses described as terrifyingly swift. Their target – Bright Abeke, the Chairman of Sapele Local Government Area.
Eyewitnesses recounted a scene of near-warfare. The assailants arrived in a small convoy, including a Range Rover SUV, and immediately began shooting into the air to disperse the crowd. Amidst the screams of guests and the smell of gunpowder, the gunmen moved with surgical precision toward the council boss, whisking him away into the night.
The violence left more than just psychological scars. In the frantic moments of the abduction, a member of the local vigilante group, identified as Ufuoma, attempted to intervene. He was met with gunfire and was later rushed to a nearby hospital. His current condition remains a source of anxious speculation across the town.
By Saturday morning, the hotel and its surrounding streets became a makeshift gathering point for distraught residents and political associates from the All Progressives Congress (APC). For many, the incident feels personal; Abeke is not just a political figure, but a central pillar of the local administration.
The atmosphere in Sapele is now one of “cautious silence.” Shops are opening late, and conversations are hushed as the community waits for a phone call that hasn’t yet come.
”The fear is palpable,” whispered one resident who witnessed the initial gunfire. “If the Chairman can be taken like this, in the open, who among us is truly safe?”

The Delta State Police Command has responded with a massive show of force. Major entry and exit points in and out of Sapele have been cordoned off as security operatives intensify their search.
SP Bright Edafe, the State Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed that the Command is throwing its full weight behind the rescue efforts.
The Commissioner of Police has ordered the Command’s Special Anti-Kidnapping Unit to deploy all available “arsenals.”
The primary goal is to rescue the Chairman unhurt and bring the perpetrators to justice.
This abduction follows a chilling 24-hour period where reports of anonymous threats of violence had already begun to circulate in the area, suggesting a pre-planned escalation of insecurity.
As the hours pass, the pressure on security agencies grows. For the people of Sapele, this isn’t just about a local government official; it is a test of the state’s ability to protect its own.
Until Bright Abeke is found, a heavy cloud remains over the metropolis—a mixture of anger, grief, and a desperate hope for a peaceful resolution.
