DR Congo Earn First World Cup Point Against Portugal

Democratic Republic of Congo made history on Wednesday after securing their first-ever point at the FIFA World Cup with a 1-1 draw against Portugal in a Group K encounter.

The Congolese side, appearing at the tournament for the first time since 1974, recovered from an early setback to earn a memorable result against the European giants.

Portugal took the lead in the sixth minute when Joao Neves headed home from Pedro Neto’s cross.

However, DR Congo responded before the break as Yoane Wissa rose unmarked to score the country’s first World Cup goal, sending their supporters into celebration.

The African side matched Portugal for large periods of the game and created several chances of their own. Cedric Bakambu came close to giving DR Congo the lead but saw his effort strike the post.

Portugal dominated possession but struggled to convert their control into clear scoring opportunities. Cristiano Ronaldo, making his sixth World Cup appearance, was unable to influence the game and missed two chances in the second half.

The Portuguese thought they had regained the lead through Joao Cancelo, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Despite facing disruptions to their preparations due to the Ebola outbreak in their home country, DR Congo produced a disciplined display to secure a historic result.

The draw leaves both teams with a point in Group K as the race for a place in the knockout stage continues.
