Messi Reflects on World Cup Final Defeat, Congratulates Spain
Lionel Messi has spoken for the first time since Argentina’s 1-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, describing the loss as deeply painful while congratulating the new champions.
Spain secured their second World Cup title after Ferran Torres scored the winning goal in extra time, ending Argentina’s reign as world champions following their triumph in 2022.
In a message shared on social media, Messi admitted the defeat would take time to overcome but praised the determination shown by his teammates throughout the tournament.
“The pain is immense, and this wound will take time to heal. But I also hold onto all the good things,” he wrote.

The 39-year-old said Argentina’s run to a second consecutive World Cup final was an achievement the team would eventually appreciate, adding that the squad’s commitment and the support of the Argentine people helped restore the country to the top level of international football.
Messi also thanked supporters for standing behind the team during the competition and congratulated Spain on winning the title.
The final marked Messi’s second World Cup final defeat, having also been on the losing side when Argentina fell 1-0 to Germany in the 2014 final.
The Argentine captain finished the tournament with eight goals and four assists, leading his country to a third World Cup final in the last four editions. He inspired comeback victories over Egypt and England in the knockout stage before Argentina’s campaign ended against a disciplined Spain side that conceded only one goal throughout the tournament.
Messi has not announced whether he will continue his international career, although his age means the 2030 World Cup could be his final opportunity if he chooses to remain available for Argentina.
