Oba of Benin Appoints New District Head for Ologbo, Ehor

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has appointed Chief Emmanuel Iyase as the new Okao Eguae (District Head from the Benin Palace) for the Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms in Ikpoba-Okha and Uhunmwode Local Government Areas of Edo State.

Chief Iyase becomes the first Okao Eguae from the Benin Palace, taking on the responsibility of strengthening traditional leadership in the two Dukedoms.

His appointment follows the suspension of the Enigie (Dukes) of Ologbo and Ehor, Prince Owen Jackson Akenzua and Chief D. E. Igiehon, alongside 69 other Dukes, over allegations of rebellion against the Benin monarchy.

During the Ekpomwen-abor, a traditional appreciation ceremony after the conferment of a chieftaincy title, held at the Ugha Ozolua axis of the Oba’s Palace in Benin City, Oba Ewuare II charged the newly appointed Okao to uphold the integrity of the monarchy and avoid any actions that could undermine the authority of the Benin throne.

“I urge the newly appointed Okao to shun unethical practices that could either undermine the Oba’s authority or bring disrepute to the Dukedoms,” the Oba stated.

The monarch also advised Chief Iyase to work in harmony with the Edionwere (elders) of the Dukedoms and collaborate with key figures within the Benin traditional authority to foster peace and development in the communities.

In response, Chief Iyase, who was accompanied by his family and well-wishers, expressed deep gratitude to Oba Ewuare II for the honour.

He assured the Oba of his commitment to upholding the responsibilities entrusted to him, pledging to serve diligently for the well-being of the people and the progress of the Ologbo and Ehor Dukedoms.
