Kano Residents Call for Urgent Drainage Clearance to Avert Flooding

By Happiness Edeawe

Residents of Baban Gwari in Fagge Local Government Area of Kano State are calling on the state government to fast-track ongoing drainage clearance efforts to mitigate the risk of flooding as the rainy season intensifies.

Speaking with reporters, community members expressed deep concern over recurring floods that have long plagued the area particularly around the Katsina Road Roundabout during the peak rainfall months of July to September.

“For many years, we’ve battled flooding here,” said Habu Abba, a resident. “We’re appealing to the government to act quickly on the drainage clearance it recently launched to spare us the usual hardship.”

Anthony Bitrus, who resides near the roundabout, echoed similar concerns. “Everyone knows this area is flood-prone. Previous administrations have shown little urgency. We hope the current government will change that.”

In Rijiyar Zaki, another vulnerable community, Abdullahi Musa noted that existing drainages have been turned into refuse dumps, increasing the risk of blockage and overflow. “If this continues, we could face severe flooding this season. The government must act fast.”

Responding to the concerns, Murtala Shehu, Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Environment, confirmed that the state government flagged off its annual drainage clearance on Friday, targeting notorious flood zones like Baban Gwari.

“The initiative is a proactive measure to prevent recurring floods and promote environmental safety,” Shehu stated. “This isn’t just routine work it’s a critical step toward strengthening urban resilience and ensuring Kano’s waterways are clear before the heavy rains begin.”

The Baban Gwari Roundabout and surrounding areas have long suffered from severe flooding, endangering public health, mobility, and safety. Residents now hope this year’s efforts will mark a turning point.
