Rema Defends Artistic Rebranding as Self-Expression

Nigerian music star Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, has addressed public concerns over his rebranding, describing it as a creative decision rather than a change in personality.

In a reflection shared via his official X handle on Thursday to mark the one-year anniversary of his second studio album HEIS, Rema explained that his shift in image was rooted in artistic expression.

The singer, who previously gained attention for his youthful energy and unique sound, surprised fans last year when he adopted a darker aesthetic, shedding his trademark mask and teddy bear, and embracing tattoos, smoking, and a more intense visual style.

While many speculated that the transformation signalled a personal shift, Rema clarified that it was a symbolic move tied to the energy of the HEIS project. He noted that the album’s controversial cover art drew inspiration from the character Itachi Uchiha in the Japanese anime series Naruto.

“HEIS, the Anniversary,” he wrote on X. “I expressed a lot of surface level reasons why I released this project over a course of interviews when it came out but, here are few symbolic details that wrap around the energy of the project I kept for myself but now, I’d like to share.”

Rema’s message comes as a reminder that for many artists, image changes often serve as deeper reflections of their evolving creative journeys, not necessarily their personal identities.
