Awujale of Ijebuland Passes On at 91 After 64-Year Reign
The Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has died at the age of 91.

The revered monarch reportedly passed away on Sunday, 13 July 2025—just hours after the death of his close friend and former Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, was confirmed in London, United Kingdom.
News of the monarch’s passing was formally announced by the Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in an official statement released via his social media platforms.
“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the transition of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who joined his ancestors today, 13 July 2025, at the age of 91,” the governor stated.
Describing the late monarch as a towering figure in the annals of Ogun State and Nigeria at large, Governor Abiodun noted that Oba Adetona was not only a custodian of tradition but also a pillar of visionary leadership and national unity.

“This sad development, coming on the heels of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, marks a profound and painful loss—not just for Ogun State, but for the entire nation,” he added.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, and his reign spanned over six decades—making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigerian history. Throughout his rule, he earned national recognition for his outspoken stance on key political and societal issues, and for his unwavering dedication to the development of Ijebuland.
Under his leadership, Ijebuland witnessed remarkable progress in infrastructure, education, health, and social welfare. He was also instrumental in elevating the status of the Ojude Oba festival, transforming it into an internationally acclaimed cultural celebration that attracted tourists and dignitaries from across the globe.

Beyond his cultural legacy, Oba Adetona was a staunch promoter of tourism and economic growth, working hand-in-hand with successive Ogun State administrations to position the region as a hub for heritage tourism and investment.
His death comes barely two months after celebrating his 91st birthday—a milestone event attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other eminent personalities, who paid glowing tributes to his life of service and remarkable statesmanship.
Palace sources confirmed that the monarch will be laid to rest according to Islamic rites at the royal cemetery reserved for past rulers of Ijebuland.
Since the news broke, an outpouring of tributes has flooded in from traditional institutions, political leaders, and community stakeholders across the country. Many described Oba Adetona as a rare breed of monarch who combined wisdom with courage, and heritage with progress.
As mourning commences across Ijebuland, preparations are underway for what is expected to be a historic and solemn burial ceremony—befitting a royal father whose impact will resonate for generations to come.
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona is remembered not only as a traditional ruler but as a national voice of reason, a champion of cultural pride, and a symbol of continuity in an ever-changing Nigeria.
