Aisha Achimugu Arrested by EFCC at Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested businesswoman Aisha Achimugu at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Achimugu, who had been declared wanted in March over allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering, was arrested shortly after her return from London.

A Federal High Court in Abuja had ordered Achimugu to appear before the EFCC on Tuesday and before the court on Wednesday. Her lawyer, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, confirmed the arrest and criticized the EFCC’s action, describing it as a violation of a court order.

According to Ojukwu, Achimugu had returned to the country voluntarily based on the court’s undertaking to honor the EFCC’s invitation. However, she was arrested at the airport around 5 am. Ojukwu also disclosed that Achimugu had commenced a hunger strike to protest what he termed a breach of her fundamental rights.

An authoritative source within the EFCC confirmed the arrest, stating that the commission had declared Achimugu wanted and could not allow her to continue walking freely. The source also noted that the court had ordered Achimugu to appear before the EFCC, but did not restrict the commission from arresting her.

As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC spokesperson had yet to respond to calls and messages seeking comment on the development. Achimugu’s case will continue to unfold as she faces allegations of criminal conspiracy and money laundering.
