Man Arrested Over Abuse of 12-Year-Old in Lagos
The Lagos State Government has confirmed the arrest of a man accused of sexually abusing a 12-year-old girl in Iyana Ipaja area, sparking outrage and concern from the public and child advocacy groups.
The incident, which reportedly occurred earlier this week, came to light after concerned residents raised the alarm, prompting immediate action from authorities.
According to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), the suspect was swiftly apprehended and is currently being held at the Ayobo Police Station.

In an official statement released on Thursday via the agency’s verified social media page, the DSVA expressed deep concern over the incident and assured the public that the state is taking all necessary steps to ensure justice is served.
The case, officials said, has already been transferred to the Gender Desk Unit of the Nigeria Police Force, where a more specialized investigation is underway.
“We are deeply troubled by this heartbreaking case of sexual abuse involving a minor. It has understandably stirred public outrage, and we are committed to seeing it through to a just conclusion,” the statement read.
The survivor, whose identity is being protected due to her age and the sensitive nature of the case, has been referred to the Ipaja Family Support Unit for both psychosocial counseling and ongoing care.
The DSVA added that the child has also received immediate medical attention to address any physical and psychological trauma she may have suffered.
Authorities have yet to release the name of the suspect, citing ongoing investigations and legal protocol. However, they confirmed that he remains in custody as law enforcement gathers more evidence and works closely with relevant agencies to build a strong case.
In addition to pursuing justice, the Lagos State Government used the opportunity to emphasize the critical role the public plays in combating sexual violence.

The DSVA commended the individuals who came forward with information, saying their alertness made it possible for the authorities to act quickly and decisively.
“We sincerely thank the vigilant members of the public who did not stay silent. It is this kind of collective responsibility that helps protect our children and communities from predators,” the agency said.
Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance on sexual violence, the Lagos State Government stressed that it will not relent in its efforts to protect the rights and dignity of every child in the state.
Officials promised that the full weight of the law would be brought against anyone found guilty of such heinous acts.
“The safety and well-being of our children remain a top priority for this administration. We will ensure that justice is not only done but is seen to be done. Perpetrators will be held fully accountable,” the agency concluded.
This case has once again underscored the urgent need for vigilance, education, and stronger safeguards around children, particularly in vulnerable communities.
As investigations continue, advocates are calling for broader societal support, including community-led prevention efforts and swift prosecution of offenders, to ensure such tragedies are prevented in the future.
Anyone with additional information related to this case is encouraged to contact the appropriate authorities or reach out to the DSVA to support ongoing investigations.
