Massive Traffic Chaos as Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down Kara Bridge, Leaves Thousands Stranded

Thousands of commuters and motorists were left stranded on Friday morning following a multi-vehicle accident on the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, inward OPIC.

The crash, which occurred around 7 a.m., involved several trucks and private cars, leading to severe traffic congestion on the critical highway that links Lagos  Nigeria’s economic hub  to other parts of the country.

While authorities have yet to confirm any fatalities, multiple injuries were reported. Emergency responders, including officials from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Police Force, quickly arrived at the scene to rescue victims and clear the wreckage.

LASTMA confirmed the incident via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle:

“We recorded an accident on the Kara bridge inward OPIC on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway with multiple vehicles. LASTMA personnel and other emergency responders have swung into action to rescue the victims and clear the affected vehicles,” the agency stated.

“The incident has dragged traffic backward to the Otedola Bridge. Patience is required from road users.”

The traffic backlog had extended to Mowe and the 7-Up area of Lagos. Many commuters were seen trekking long distances due to the standstill, while others waited in frustration for the road to clear.

In a later update, LASTMA said the accident site had been cleared:

“All vehicles involved in the earlier reported accident on Kara Bridge inwards OPIC have now been successfully evacuated. The road has been reopened for full use. Our officers remain on the ground to manage the traffic and restore smooth flow.”
