Nigeria's First Female Fighter Pilot Makes History in Ghana

By Happiness Edeawe

Nigeria’s first female fighter pilot, Flight Lieutenant Kafayat Sanni, has once again made the nation proud after emerging as the Best Allied Student at the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC) in Accra.

Sanni also clinched the award for Best Assistant Commandant Paper during the college’s graduation ceremony, held on Friday and attended by senior military leaders and dignitaries from across the continent.

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) announced her feat in a statement issued Saturday by the Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame.

Sanni first made history in 2019 when she became the NAF’s first female fighter pilot after completing her training in the United States. Since then, she has flown the Alpha Jet and served as an instructor pilot on the Super Mushshak, mentoring a new generation of NAF pilots.

Her latest accomplishment, according to Ejodame, not only highlights her personal discipline and academic brilliance but also reflects Nigeria’s growing influence in regional military leadership and commitment to gender inclusion in the armed forces.

The achievement, he added, demonstrates the Air Force’s continued investment in human capital under the leadership of the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubaka.
