The Sokoto State Government has launched a campaign to tackle a meningitis outbreak affecting 300 residents.
At a sensitisation event held on Thursday at Alu Ya Gode Hall, Health Commissioner Dr Faruku Abubakar Wurno confirmed that prompt intervention is making a difference. “Although over 300 cases have been recorded, only 16 patients remain hospitalised while most have been treated successfully,” he stated.
The campaign, led by the Ward Development Committee Forum with the Ministry of Health and the State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, aims to promote early detection and awareness of meningitis symptoms including high fever, vomiting, and neck stiffness.
Local health experts, including Dr. Muhammad Bello Marnona and Dr. Larai Aliyu Tambuwal, emphasized that meningitis is preventable if individuals seek timely medical care. Traditional leaders, notably the representative of the Sultan of Sokoto and the Gagi District Head, praised the state administration for its proactive response.

Global partners such as UNICEF and Médecins Sans Frontières, along with academic experts from the region, have also expressed support for the campaign. Officials remain committed to safeguarding public health and promoting vigilance.
In addition to the awareness drives, the government is distributing pamphlets, setting up mobile clinics, and training healthcare workers on early diagnosis and treatment protocols. Community meetings in affected areas provide firsthand updates on preventive measures. Health authorities continue to monitor the outbreak closely, ensuring resources reach those most in need promptly and effectively. This coordinated effort reflects the state’s determination to protect lives and strengthen healthcare system across communities.
