Scavengers Reselling Used Wigs From DumpsitesĀ
In the bustling city of Lagos, scavengers have discovered a lucrative business in collecting and reselling used wigs from dumpsites. Despite the potential health risks, these wigs are being repackaged and sold, often to customers in northern Nigeria.
Scavengers at dumpsites in Lagos, such as Olusosun in Ojota and Solous in Igando, collect used wigs and sort them for resale. The wigs are often transported to northern Nigeria, where they are in high demand. According to traders, the used wigs are sold at varying prices, with some fetching as much as N1,000.
However, dermatologists have warned that wearing used wigs from dumpsites poses significant health risks, including fungal and bacterial infections, infestations, and allergic reactions. Dr. Roli Madubuko, a consultant dermatologist, noted that these wigs can harbor parasites, such as head lice and mites, which can survive without human contact for up to three weeks.
Dr. Nkiruka Onodugo, another consultant dermatologist, also cautioned against the practice, stating that women should be careful about the wigs they purchase. A study by Nigerian researchers found that synthetic hairs, including wigs, can be contaminated with toxic chemicals, which can cause serious health consequences.
The trade in used wigs from dumpsites highlights the need for greater awareness about the potential health risks associated with such practices. As the demand for affordable beauty products continues to grow, it is essential to prioritize public health and safety.
