Beyond the Viral Lens: Military Defends the Integrity of its Peace Mission

‎ABUJA — In an era where a single viral video can outpace years of institutional progress, the Nigerian military found itself on the defensive this Tuesday, moving to protect the fragile public trust essential to ending the nation’s long-running insurgency.

‎The firestorm began when Danish vlogger Jones Raw posted footage allegedly filmed at rehabilitation centers in Maiduguri. The clips, which quickly gained traction on social media, appeared to show armed men—described as “repentant” insurgents—preparing to return to the frontlines, this time fighting alongside the very troops who once hunted them.

‎For a public still healing from the scars of a decade-long conflict, the imagery was jarring. However, military officials insist the video tells a story that simply isn’t true.

‎Brig. Gen. Yusuf Ali, Coordinator of Operation Safe Corridor (OPSC), issued a direct rebuttal to the claims, characterizing them as not only false but a threat to national stability.

‎The heart of the military’s defense lies in the fundamental philosophy of OPSC: it is a “non-kinetic” program. In human terms, this means it is a factory for peace, not a training ground for soldiers.

‎“At no point are participants armed, mobilized, or deployed for combat operations,” Ali stated. “The program continues to serve as a critical component of Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy by reducing the pool of fighters and supporting long-term national stability.”

‎To dismantle the misinformation, Brig. Gen. Ali highlighted key discrepancies between the viral footage and the reality on the ground;

‎The official OPSC facility is located in Mallam Sidi. Ali noted that the structural design and layout seen in the vlogger’s video are “clearly inconsistent” with the secure, controlled environment of the actual camp.

‎Nigeria utilizes several state-led initiatives for de-radicalization that operate independently of the Federal Government and Defence Headquarters. Ali clarified that participants in these localized programs are not recognized or supervised by the official OPSC framework.

‎The military confirmed that Jones Raw has never been granted access to official OPSC facilities, casting further doubt on the origins of his footage.

‎The stakes of this PR battle go beyond mere optics. Operation Safe Corridor relies on the cooperation of international partners like the European Union and, more importantly, the acceptance of local communities who must eventually welcome these ex-combatants back home.

‎By suggesting that “repentant” fighters are being re-armed, the military argues that such narratives could sabotage the delicate process of voluntary disengagement—the “soft” exit strategy intended to end the war without further bloodshed.

‎In a move toward radical transparency, Brig. Gen. Ali has extended an invitation to the vlogger and any “credible observers” to visit the Mallam Sidi camp. The goal is to allow for an independent verification of a program that aims to turn yesterday’s enemies into tomorrow’s citizens.
