LASU Staff End Strike, School Reopens Wednesday
After nearly two weeks of halted activities, staff of Lagos State University, Ojo, will return to their duty posts on Wednesday following the suspension of their strike.
The industrial action, which began on July 31, had stalled academic and administrative work, forcing the Senate to put the second-semester examinations on hold.
The decision to end the strike came on Monday during a congress of the Joint Action Committee, which represents both academic and non-academic unions. Members agreed to resume work while a formal communiqué outlining the suspension terms is expected.
Last week, union representatives and the university management signed a deal with the Lagos State Government after a five-hour meeting with Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat. The agreement allows for the payment of 12 months out of 23 months’ salary arrears, split between the state and the university management, to be cleared in instalments from August to December 2025.

Though some workers had initially rejected the offer, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello urged them to consider the broader impact of a prolonged strike on students and the institution’s reputation.
Following the resolution, the university Senate on Monday approved the reopening of hostels across its Ojo, Ikeja, and Epe campuses from Wednesday. The postponed second-semester examinations will now begin on August 18.
