Remo Stars, Rivers United Share Spoils in NPFL 2025/26 Season Opener
The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season began on a dramatic note on Friday as Remo Stars were held to a 1-1 draw by Rivers United in the curtain-raiser at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta.
Rivers United made an early statement, taking the lead in the 3rd minute when forward Aniekeme Okon pounced from close range to score the first goal of the new campaign, silencing the lively home crowd.
The hosts, however, responded swiftly. Just six minutes later, striker Victor Mbaoma displayed trademark composure to slot home the equalizer, restoring parity and reigniting the atmosphere inside the stadium.
Mbaoma’s evening was cut short when he picked up an injury before halftime, forcing Remo Stars into an early substitution with Adama Goita taking his place.

The second half was more tactical than explosive, with both teams tightening up defensively while probing for a late winner. Rivers United threatened on the counter with their pacy wingers, while Remo Stars, spurred on by their home fans, pushed forward in bursts.
The most dramatic moment came in stoppage time as Rivers United defender Temple Emekayi was sent off for a rash challenge, becoming the first player to see red this season. Despite the setback, the visitors held on until the final whistle.
At full-time, both sides settled for a point each. Rivers United may feel they let an early advantage slip, but Remo Stars will take positives from their resilience and fighting spirit in front of their supporters.
