Police now more civil in dealings with Nigerians — AIG
By Kalu blessing
The Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 17, Ondo and Ekiti States, Ajani Omolabi, has said that police officers have become more civil in their approach to citizens to strengthen modern policing. Omolabi, who spoke in Akure on Sunday, said the shift in attitude had helped to build trust with communities and made it easier for the police to gather information needed to fight crime. “The police have become civil rather than being bossy. We come to the level of the people, engage them, and we understand one another. It also helps us to get information easily from them,” he said. The AIG explained that seminars and lectures had been organised for officers and men in the zone to promote openness, transparency, and professionalism in their conduct.
He added that he had also held meetings with community leaders to encourage them to pass information directly to Divisional Police Officers, Commissioners, or his office, with assurances of protection for informants. Omolabi stressed that the public should see the police as friends and partners in the fight against crime, describing officers as “servants to the people.” He noted that his office operates an open-door policy, saying civilians had free access to him since his assumption of duty, while his mobile number had been circulated for complaints and grievances.

The AIG also said personnel were being encouraged to further their education, particularly in law, to improve policing and prosecution of cases. “Police are very proactive now, and we appreciate the effort of the institution for creating opportunities for personnel to go to school,” he added.
