Police Arrest Man Claiming To Be ‘Obi of Lagos’

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos.”

Azubike was picked up alongside three others while attempting to stage an unveiling ceremony linked to the disputed title. Police said the suspects had planned to present a prototype of a proposed N1.5 billion “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” at a hall in Amuwo Odofin on September 13.

Those arrested with him include Chief Chibuzor Ani, 57, Chief Martins Nwaodika, 65, and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi, 41. The four are being held at the police command headquarters in Ikeja.

The Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, confirmed that tactical teams were deployed to the venue to prevent unrest and protect unsuspecting citizens from falling victim to the scheme. He said the suspects would be charged to court after investigations are completed.

Jimoh warned residents to be wary of impostors exploiting cultural and traditional titles, noting that such actions were illegal and capable of disturbing public peace.

Meanwhile, this is not the first time police have clamped down on such activities. In 2023, the Eze Ndigbo of Ajao Estate, Frederick Nwajagu, was also arrested for unlawfully parading himself as a titled chief in Lagos.
