Real Madrid Part Ways with Coach Xabi Alonso, Appoint Álvaro Arbeloa as Replacement
In a surprise move, Real Madrid has announced the departure of Xabi Alonso as head coach, with the club appointing B team manager Álvaro Arbeloa to take the reins. The decision, confirmed on Monday, follows a disappointing defeat for the club against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, a match that ended 3-2 in favour of the Catalan side.
In their official statement, Real Madrid confirmed that Alonso left by mutual agreement, marking the end of a turbulent eight-month tenure. Despite high hopes upon his arrival, the former Madrid and Spain midfielder struggled to get the best out of his squad. Under Alonso’s guidance, the team’s performances were inconsistent, and reports suggested tensions within the dressing room, notably between the coach and star player Vinícius Júnior.
The statement expressed gratitude for Alonso’s efforts, acknowledging that his legacy as a Madrid legend remains intact: “Xabi Alonso will always carry the affection and admiration of all Madridistas, having represented the club’s values throughout his career. Real Madrid will always be his home,” the club said. It went on to thank Alonso and his staff for their hard work, wishing them well in their future endeavours.
Alonso’s departure came at a time when the team was underperforming in La Liga, trailing rivals Barcelona by four points at the season’s halfway mark. This added further pressure on the coach, who had arrived in May with a contract extending to 2028, bringing expectations of success.

Álvaro Arbeloa, who takes over as the new manager, is no stranger to the club. A former Madrid player, Arbeloa enjoyed an illustrious career at the Santiago Bernabéu, winning numerous titles including two UEFA Champions League trophies and a Spanish league title. He was also part of Spain’s 2010 World Cup-winning team and their victorious European Championship sides in 2008 and 2012. Since his retirement, he has been coaching Madrid’s B team and has earned praise for his work with the club’s youth squads.
Alonso’s tenure was marked by promise after his successful season with Bayer Leverkusen, where he led the team to an unprecedented Bundesliga and cup double in his first full season as manager. However, his time at Madrid failed to replicate that success. His struggles were further compounded by the increasing pressure to meet the club’s lofty expectations.
Arbeloa now faces the challenge of steering the ship back on course. The club hopes that the former defender’s deep understanding of Madrid’s culture and values will help restore stability and improve the team’s performances in the second half of the season.
