Algeria Issues Apology After Afcon Gesture Mocking Lumumba Superfan Sparks Backlash
Algeria’s football federation has apologised to a Congolese supporter whose silent tribute to pan African icon Patrice Lumumba made him one of the most recognisable figures at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Michel Nkuka Mboladinga captured the imagination of fans by attending Democratic Republic of Congo matches dressed as Lumumba, the country’s first prime minister. Remaining motionless throughout each game, he stood on a pedestal with one arm raised, mirroring the famous statue of Lumumba in Kinshasa as crowds around him cheered.
The moment turned sour after Algeria’s dramatic extra time victory over DR Congo on Tuesday. Algerian forward Mohamed Amine Amoura was criticised after appearing to mock Mboladinga by copying his pose and then falling to the ground, as though the statue had been knocked over.
The gesture triggered widespread criticism online, prompting Amoura to issue an apology on Instagram. He said he had not understood the meaning of the tribute and insisted his actions were meant as light hearted humour, not disrespect.
“At that moment, I did not know what the person or symbol represented,” the 25 year old said. “I meant no offence and had no intention of provoking anyone.”
Lumumba remains a powerful symbol across Africa, not only in DR Congo but throughout the continent, for his role in the anti colonial struggle. He was assassinated in 1961 in a plot backed by Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States, and is remembered as a martyr of African independence.
Following the controversy, the Algerian Football Association reached out to Mboladinga and invited him to meet the team. Although he was unable to travel to Rabat, the federation’s media officer, Saïd Fellak, travelled to Casablanca to meet him and other Congolese supporters.
During the visit, Mboladinga was presented with an Algerian national team shirt bearing the name “Lumumba” on the back, a gesture intended to repair relations and acknowledge the significance of his tribute. Congolese Sports Minister Didier Budimbu was also present, and images of the meeting were shared widely among fans.

The emotional weight of the incident was clear at the final whistle in Rabat, where DR Congo were eliminated from the tournament. Mboladinga was seen removing his glasses to wipe away tears before stepping down from his pedestal and leaning against it in visible distress.
It remains unclear whether the Lumumba superfan will be present when DR Congo compete in the intercontinental World Cup qualifiers in Mexico later this year. Six teams will contest the final two qualification places ahead of the tournament, which begins in June.
Algeria have already secured their place at the World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States. Amoura said he hoped to see the Congolese side there as well.
“I respect Congo and their team,” he said. “I sincerely wish them the best and hope they qualify.”
