Trump Is the Only Leader Who Can Stop Putin, Says Polish President

Poland’s president, Karol Nawrocki, has said Donald Trump is the only world leader capable of stopping Vladimir Putin from threatening Europe, arguing that the continent must rally behind the former US president’s efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

President Nawrocki said Russia’s leader could not be trusted, but insisted that Europe needed to support Trump if it wanted lasting security. He described Putin’s actions as a direct danger not only to Ukraine, but also to Poland and other countries in central and eastern Europe.

President Nawrocki, who has long been an outspoken supporter of Trump, said the Russian leader was actively testing Nato’s resolve. He pointed to a major drone incursion last September, when more than 20 uncrewed aircraft crossed into Polish airspace from Belarus and Ukraine. He described the incident as unprecedented, saying no Nato member had previously experienced a drone attack on that scale.

According to Nawrocki, Poland has been living in a state of hybrid war with Russia since 2021, facing not only drone incursions but also sustained disinformation campaigns. He said these tactics showed that Europe was entering an increasingly dangerous period.

The Polish president thanked the UK for deploying RAF Typhoon jets to help protect Polish airspace, calling Britain’s contribution to Nato’s eastern flank both vital and deeply appreciated. He also praised British troops stationed in Poland, saying their presence demonstrated real commitment to collective defence.

Asked about his close relationship with Donald Trump, particularly amid concerns raised in Europe over Trump’s comments about Greenland, Nawrocki insisted the United States remained the ultimate guarantor of European security. He said Trump’s actions deserved respect and support, warning that Europe risked weakening itself by drifting away from the US.

On Greenland, Nawrocki said the issue should be resolved through dialogue between Denmark and the United States, ideally within Nato structures. He expressed confidence that the dispute would not fracture the alliance.

However, the Polish president was critical of European leaders for what he described as misplaced priorities. He argued that Europe had spent too much time focused on ideological debates, including climate policy and migration, while neglecting its own security. Poland, he said, had taken a different approach and was now spending close to five percent of its GDP on defence.

Despite his criticism, Nawrocki spoke warmly about relations between Poland and the UK, describing them as extremely important. He noted that around one million Polish citizens now live in Britain and said he hoped Poland would be invited to take part in next year’s G20 summit, which the UK is set to host.
