12-Year-Old Boy Dies After Shark Attack in Sydney Harbour

A 12-year-old boy has tragically passed away from injuries sustained in a shark attack in Sydney Harbour. Nico Antic was attacked on 18 January while jumping off a rock ledge with friends, and authorities suspect the shark was a bull shark.

His parents, Lorena and Juan, confirmed the news in a statement, expressing their heartbreak over the loss of their “happy, friendly, and sporty” son, who was known for his kind and generous spirit. “Nico was always full of life, and that’s how we’ll remember him,” they said.

The attack occurred in the afternoon, and Nico’s friends were praised for their bravery in jumping into the water to assist him after the shark struck. He sustained severe leg injuries and was rushed to Sydney Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Despite undergoing surgery and being placed in an induced coma, Nico tragically passed away.

The incident is part of a concerning series of shark attacks along the New South Wales coast, with four attacks reported over just two days. In another attack, a surfer on Sydney’s northern beaches narrowly avoided injury, while a 27-year-old man suffered life-changing injuries at a nearby beach.

The string of shark attacks followed heavy rain in the region, creating murky water conditions that experts believe may have attracted the sharks closer to shore. These conditions, combined with nutrients washed into the water, have created a “perfect storm” for the sharks, especially bull sharks.

Beaches across Sydney were closed for safety, with many now reopening for the Australia Day long weekend. A fundraiser for Nico’s family has raised over $240,000 to support them during this difficult time.
