Yusuf Calls for Southern Presidency to Continue Until 2031

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has called for the presidency to remain in the South until 2031, arguing that the existing rotation between the northern and southern regions should be respected ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf made the position known in Kano on Sunday while receiving 50 branded saloon vehicles donated by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support the mobilisation campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other All Progressives Congress candidates in the state.

The governor said the arrangement followed an understanding among political leaders from the two regions and should continue after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari completed his two terms in office.

According to Yusuf, allowing each region to complete two presidential terms would provide enough time for administrations to implement major policies, programmes and development projects.

He therefore urged Northern political leaders to support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, saying the South should be allowed to complete its proposed eight-year cycle before power returns to the North in 2031.

“The North has completed eight years under the late President Muhammadu Buhari. Now, we must exercise patience and allow the South to complete their eight years in office,” Yusuf said.

He argued that rotational presidency could promote fairness, national cohesion, mutual trust and a sense of belonging among Nigerians from different parts of the country.

Yusuf also appealed to political parties and their supporters to conduct peaceful and issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections.

He urged politicians to focus on policies, programmes and development plans instead of personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric, warning that actions capable of threatening peace would not be tolerated in Kano.

The governor also commended Tompolo for donating the campaign vehicles and assured him of support for Tinubu and other APC candidates in the state.

Earlier, Tompolo, represented by Kestin Pondi, urged voters in Kano to support Tinubu, declaring that there would be “no vacancy in Aso Rock until 2031.”

He also urged Nigerians not to be persuaded by opposition candidates promising to spend only four years in office, while crediting Tinubu’s administration with economic and infrastructure-related developments.

Kano APC Chairman Umar Haruna Doguwa said the party would deploy the vehicles to support groups and grassroots mobilisers as part of its campaign activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

He said the party was prepared to mobilise support for its candidates while maintaining what he described as an issue-based campaign.
