Obedient Movement Demands Transparency Before INEC Uses AI in 2027 Poll

The Obedient Movement has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to provide details of its planned use of Artificial Intelligence in the 2027 general elections before deploying the technology.

National Coordinator of the movement, Dr Yunusa Tanko, made the demand in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, following INEC Chairman Prof Joash Amupitan’s disclosure that the commission had begun deploying AI tools ahead of the elections.

Amupitan had said the technology would be used to detect discrepancies and administrative errors in election results, while also helping the commission tackle AI-generated disinformation, including cloned voices, deepfake videos, forged official documents and fabricated result sheets.

However, Tanko said INEC needed to explain how the technology would operate, the specific electoral problems it was designed to address and the safeguards that would prevent its misuse.

He also cited a recent investigation by Mundx Analytics, which alleged that presidential results from more than 50,000 polling units were uploaded through mobile phones, arguing that technological innovation could not replace institutional integrity.

“Introducing AI into a system that has yet to account for its existing failures is not electoral reform. It is an attempt to distract Nigerians from the fundamental questions of institutional independence, transparency, and accountability,” Tanko said.

The movement called on INEC to publish a comprehensive roadmap for the 2027 elections, including the technologies, procedures and security measures it plans to use.

It also demanded an independent audit of INEC’s existing electoral technology, with the findings and proposed corrective measures made public.

Tanko further called for a transparent and verifiable result transmission process and insisted that any proposed AI tools should undergo independent testing and public scrutiny before being deployed.
