At the University of Ilorin, a 200-level Mass Communication student took his own life at his residence in the Oke-Odo area of Tanke, Ilorin. The student, whose name has been withheld, succumbed to the pressures of financial hardship.
According to eyewitnesses, the student ingested a poisonous substance while his roommate was away attending lectures. A suicide note found at the scene revealed the student’s struggles to cope with the economic challenges that have been exacerbated by the current financial crisis.
However, the deceased student who had a commendable cumulative academic grade of 4.5, was sponsored by his widowed mother, a retired school teacher. Despite the financial assistance provided by his colleagues, who contributed towards his tuition and living expenses, the student was unable to meet his financial obligations.
