PASAN Slams DSS for Unlawful Detention of Lagos Assembly Staff, Demands Immediate Justice
The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Lagos State Chapter, has condemned the arrest and detention of three Lagos State House of Assembly staff members by the Department of State Security Services (DSS), calling it a gross abuse of power and a violation of their fundamental rights.
The detained staff, two Sergeants-at-Arms officers and a public affairs officer were arrested on February 17, 2025, for preventing DSS officials from entering the legislative chamber with firearms, a move that contradicts House protocols and long-standing security norms.
Speaking on the matter, PASAN chairman, Comrade Babatunde Ogunlana, described the arrest, detention, and subsequent trial of the staff members as an alarming display of intimidation and a violation of due process.
He called for their immediate release, emphasizing that their actions were in accordance with established legislative rules.

Ogunlana further demanded a thorough and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding their arrest, alleging that the detained staff had been subjected to torture and inhumane treatment.
He warned that such an abuse of power, if left unchecked, could set a dangerous precedent for the disregard of workers’ rights and rule of law within government institutions.
Concerns have been raised about the health and safety of the detained staff, particularly one with asthma.
PASAN has called on the Director-General of the DSS, the Lagos State Governor, and civil society organizations to intervene immediately and ensure justice is served.
The association also warned that failure to act swiftly could lead to wider protests and legal action, as it remains committed to defending the rights and dignity of its members.
In response to the escalating tensions, Hon. Stephen Ogundipe, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, assured the public that the Lagos State House of Assembly is actively engaging with relevant authorities to secure the unconditional release of the detained staff members.
