Atalanta Co-Owner Admits Gasperini’s Mistake Over Lookman Comments
Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca has acknowledged that head coach Gian Piero Gasperini made an error in publicly criticizing Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman but insists that the Italian remains a “great and passionate coach.”
The controversy erupted after Gasperini labeled Lookman as “one of the worst” penalty takers following his miss in a crucial Champions League clash against Club Brugge.
The remark sparked debate, with many questioning the coach’s handling of the situation.
Speaking with Gazzetta dello Sport, Pagliuca downplayed the incident, emphasizing the club’s collective approach to challenges.
“We want to put this situation behind us, and I think we have, considering the 5-0 victory [against Empoli],” he said.
Atalanta Not Proud of Gasperini’s Remarks
Pagliuca stressed that Atalanta thrives on unity and resilience, highlighting Lookman’s key contributions to the team’s successful campaign.
“The players are having an extraordinary season; we wouldn’t be where we are now without the contributions of Lookman, De Ketelaere, and the whole team,” he said.
Reflecting on Gasperini’s emotional outburst, Pagliuca admitted, “His reaction was emotional and unfortunate. It was a mistake that went against our policy something we are not proud of. But I repeat, Gasp remains a great coach.”
Gasperini’s Future at Atalanta Uncertain
Beyond the Lookman controversy, Gasperini’s long-term future at the club remains in doubt. The 66-year-old has stated that he will not sign a contract extension, meaning he could leave in 2026 or as early as the end of the current season.
“This is something Luca Percassi will handle,” Pagliuca said, referring to Atalanta’s CEO. “We will do whatever Gasp believes is the best solution for him.”
Atalanta Bounce Back After Champions League Exit
Following their Champions League elimination at the hands of Club Brugge, Atalanta responded with a resounding 5-0 victory over Empoli in Serie A.
Pagliuca described the win as a significant morale booster. “Serie A is a very competitive league; winning 5-0 away from home is never easy. It was a great satisfaction. We needed it,” he said.
While crediting Brugge for their performance, he also criticized a key refereeing decision. “If that was a penalty, they should call five per game,” he remarked.
With 13 matches remaining, Atalanta sits third in the Serie A table, just three points off the top.
“Every year, the goal is to finish as high as possible,” Pagliuca said. “Credit must be given to Luca and Antonio Percassi and our staff for building a squad capable of competing despite the many injuries.”

Atalanta Invests in the Future
Beyond immediate football ambitions, Atalanta is making significant investments in infrastructure.
“We bought land in Zingonia next to the training center to expand what is already one of the best youth development hubs in Europe,” Pagliuca said.
Additionally, the club has renovated its home stadium, enhancing the fan experience while maintaining its historic character.
“It’s a masterpiece,” Pagliuca said. “One of the most beautiful stadiums not only in Italy but in Europe. And the food in the skyboxes? Provided by a Michelin-starred chef. I’d gain twenty kilos if I attended every match!”
Lookman Reacts
Ademola Lookman has expressed deep disappointment over Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini’s remarks following their Champions League exit. After Lookman’s missed penalty in the 3-1 defeat to Club Brugge, Gasperini labeled him “one of the worst penalty takers” he had ever seen.
In response, Lookman described these comments as “deeply disrespectful” and hurtful, emphasizing his commitment to the team and clarifying that he was instructed to take the penalty by the designated taker.
Despite the missed penalty, Lookman has been a pivotal player for Atalanta this season, contributing 15 goals and playing a significant role in their successes, including their Europa League victory last season. He expressed his intention to use this experience to strengthen his resolve and continue contributing positively to the team.
In light of the incident, Atalanta co-owner Stephen Pagliuca acknowledged that Gasperini’s comments were a mistake and emphasized the club’s collective responsibility approach.
Pagliuca reiterated the club’s commitment to unity and resilience, highlighting Lookman’s significant contributions to the team’s performance this season.
