FCCPC Summons MultiChoice Over Subscription Price Hike

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has summoned MultiChoice Nigeria over its planned increase in subscription fees for DStv and GOtv, set to take effect on March 1, 2025.

In a statement by Ondaje Ijagwu, FCCPC’s Director of Corporate Affairs, the commission raised concerns over frequent price hikes in Nigeria’s pay-TV industry, warning against possible anti-competitive practices and consumer exploitation.

As part of its regulatory oversight, the commission has invited MultiChoice’s Chief Executive Officer for an investigative hearing on February 27, 2025, at its headquarters.

“The FCCPC remains committed to ensuring that businesses operate fairly and in line with Nigeria’s consumer protection laws. If MultiChoice fails to provide a satisfactory justification for its pricing strategy or is found in violation of fair competition principles, the commission will take necessary enforcement actions, including sanctions and corrective measures,” the statement read.

The FCCPC further assured Nigerian consumers of its commitment to promoting transparency, accountability, and fair competition in the digital subscription industry.

In response to the public backlash, MultiChoice Nigeria has announced a support package aimed at cushioning the impact of the new tariff adjustments.

The company stated that subscribers who renew their DStv or GOtv subscriptions before expiration will continue to pay the old rates for a limited time as a loyalty incentive.

Additionally, customers can benefit from the ongoing Step Up offer, which allows active and disconnected subscribers to access a higher package when they renew at a level above their current plan. This offer runs until March 31, 2025.

As part of further relief measures, MultiChoice is expected to announce a reduction in the subscription price for Showmax, its streaming service, on February 28, providing more affordable access to live sports, movies, and entertainment.
