OpenAI, the artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, has secured $40 billion in fresh funding to advance AI research, expand its computing capabilities, and enhance its technology offerings.

The company disclosed this in a blog post on Monday, stating that the new investment values OpenAI at $300 billion post-funding.

According to OpenAI, the capital injection will drive groundbreaking advancements in AI, with a focus on scientific exploration, personalized learning, and boosting human creativity.

“We are excited to announce a new funding round of $40 billion at a $300 billion post-money valuation. This will allow us to push AI research boundaries, scale our computing infrastructure, and provide more powerful tools for the 500 million users who engage with ChatGPT weekly,” the company stated.

SoftBank Group emerged as one of the major investors in this round. OpenAI acknowledged the firm’s expertise in scaling transformative technology, emphasizing that the partnership will contribute to its long-term vision of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for humanity’s benefit.

This funding news comes shortly after OpenAI introduced a major update to ChatGPT, incorporating image generation into the chatbot’s capabilities.

Backed by Microsoft, OpenAI described the new feature—which allows users to create and modify images using GPT-4o—as a pivotal step in integrating visual content seamlessly into AI-driven communication.

During the announcement, the company showcased an AI-generated image highlighting improved text accuracy compared to earlier models, demonstrating significant progress in AI-powered visual generation.
