Airtel Nigeria, the country’s second-largest telecom operator, has increased its data and call prices, citing rising operational costs. The tariff adjustment, which affects various data bundles, is in line with the ongoing industry push for a review to mitigate the impact of inflation and forex volatility.
According to details published on Airtel’s website, the price revision includes increases of up to 50% on various data plans. However, a senior Airtel official clarified that the increase is not as high as 50%.
The revised data plans include new prices for daily and weekly bundles. For instance, customers can now purchase 40MB of data for N50, valid for one day, or 100MB for N100, also valid for one day. Other revised plans include N200 for 200MB valid for three days, N350 for 1GB valid for one day, and N500 for 750MB plus 1GB YouTube Night and 200MB YouTube Music/Spotify valid for seven days.
Airtel has assured customers that its data plans remain affordable and reliable. The company has also increased voice call tariffs over the weekend.
The tariff adjustment is not unique to Airtel, as MTN, Nigeria’s largest telecom provider, has also implemented similar price increases. The Nigerian Communications Commission had approved the tariff review to support long-term service improvements.
However, subscribers may face increased financial pressure as communication costs rise. The telecom operators are grappling with inflation, foreign exchange volatility, and the rising cost of network expansion.
