Akpabio Rejects Calls to Resign Over Sexual Harassment Allegations, Insists Claims Are False

The President of the Nigerian Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has dismissed growing calls for his resignation over sexual harassment allegations made by the suspended Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Speaking during Thursday’s plenary session, shortly after the Senate passed key tax reform bills, Akpabio said he had no intention of stepping down, insisting the accusations were baseless and politically motivated.

“I’m not one of those people who will step down for false allegations. When it is eventually proven that the accusations were unfounded, they will say, ‘Oh, we were unfair to Akpabio.’ I won’t be part of that,” he stated.

He also compared his situation to Black Americans who were wrongfully imprisoned due to racial prejudice.

“Who told you I was going to step down? If you watch recent revelations in America, you’ll see how some Black people were imprisoned for 25 or 27 years over false accusations,” Akpabio added.

Since the allegations surfaced, several prominent figures including former Senate President Bukola Saraki, civil society groups, and public commentators have urged Akpabio to step aside to allow for an impartial investigation.

In addition to the harassment claims, Akpabio is facing public scrutiny over alleged links to a professor recently convicted of electoral fraud in connection with the 2019 general elections.

Despite mounting pressure, the Senate President maintained his innocence and reiterated his resolve to continue in office.
