Atiku Bows Out of PDP After Decades of Loyalty

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally withdrawn his membership from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his long-standing ties with the party he helped to establish over two decades ago.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the chairman of his ward in Jada, Adamawa State, Atiku said his decision to leave was immediate and final. He cited growing concerns over the party’s direction, which he said no longer reflects the ideals on which it was founded.

Atiku, who served as Nigeria’s Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP and twice contested the presidency on its platform, described the move as deeply painful but necessary. He expressed gratitude for the years he spent with the party and the opportunities it offered him.

“As one of its founding members, stepping away from the PDP is not an easy choice. But I can no longer ignore the clear departure from the principles that once defined us,” Atiku wrote.

The letter, which has since circulated online, carries his signature and a tone of both appreciation and disappointment. He acknowledged the PDP’s role in shaping his political journey but said the changes within the party had made it impossible for him to continue.

He ended his note by wishing the party well, thanking its members for their past support.
