Benue Schools to End Kindergarten Graduations, Custom Textbooks

The Benue State Government has rolled out new policies aimed at easing financial pressures on parents and making education more affordable, including a ban on graduation ceremonies for Kindergarten, Nursery, and Basic school students.

In a statement issued on August 15, 2025, by Mrs. Helen Zeramo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Knowledge Management, the government also prohibited the use of customised textbooks and exercise books in all schools.

“All compulsory graduation ceremonies in Benue State schools are hereby abolished, especially for Kindergarten, Nursery, and Basic schools,” the statement read.

The move is designed to allow students to reuse and share books, a practice that officials say will reduce costs for families.

Under the new rules, schools must stop mandatory extra lessons outside regular hours unless parents explicitly agree. The reforms, part of Governor Hyacinth Alia’s push for accessible education, will begin in the 2025/2026 academic year.

To discuss the changes, the government has invited school proprietors, Parent-Teacher Associations, and other stakeholders to a meeting on August 26, 2025
