Broos Leaves Door Open on South Africa Future After World Cup Exit
South Africa coach Hugo Broos has hinted that he could remain involved with Bafana Bafana despite previously stating that he would retire after the FIFA World Cup.
The 74-year-old Belgian made the remarks following South Africa’s 1-0 defeat to Canada in the last 32 on Sunday, a result that ended the country’s campaign in the tournament.
Broos had earlier announced plans to step away from coaching after the World Cup, saying he wanted to spend more time with his wife, children and grandchildren after a career spanning more than three decades.
However, speaking after the loss in Los Angeles, the veteran coach said he was not ready to make a final decision while still dealing with the disappointment of elimination.
“It is not clever to make decisions when you are disappointed, so I will not do it here,” Broos said during his post-match press conference.

He also pointed to the physical difference between both teams as a key factor in the result, noting that Canada’s power and speed gave them an advantage.
“I have said many times that modern football is more than just technique. There is power and speed, and we do not have it in our team yet. Canada had those qualities,” he said.
South Africa’s hopes of reaching the round of 16 ended when Stephen Eustaquio scored a stoppage-time winner for the tournament co-hosts.
Despite the defeat, Broos leaves behind a significant legacy since taking charge in 2021. He guided South Africa to their first World Cup appearance in 16 years and led the team beyond the group stage for the first time.
Reports within the South African Football Association suggest the coach could continue as head coach or take up another role within the national team structure, including scouting South African players based in Europe.
Broos has also been credited with helping revive interest in the national team. Attendance at matches increased significantly during his tenure, while South Africa secured a memorable Group A victory over South Korea at the World Cup.
South Africa will now turn attention to the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, where they have been drawn in Group D alongside Kenya, Guinea and Eritrea.
