Breaking: Bybit suffers $1.4bn crypto hack. The cryptocurrency exchange company experienced a significant security breach, resulting in the loss of approximately $1.4 billion in Ethereum assets.

The incident involved the compromise of the exchange’s Ethereum multisignature cold wallet, leading to the unauthorized transfer of funds to unknown addresses. The breach was first identified by on-chain security analyst ZachXBT, who reported suspicious outflows from Bybit’s wallets.

Bybit’s CEO, Ben Zhou, later confirmed the incident, explaining that the attack occurred during a routine transfer from the exchange’s Ethereum multisignature cold wallet to a warm wallet.

The attackers employed a sophisticated method that masked the signing interface, displaying the correct address while altering the underlying smart contract logic. This deception led the wallet’s signers to unknowingly authorize a fraudulent smart contract update, granting the attackers control over the cold wallet and enabling them to transfer its holdings to unidentified addresses.

The assets stolen include 401,347 ETH, 90,376 stETH, 15,000 cmETH, and 8,000 mETH, which have been moved to unknown wallets. Despite the substantial loss, Zhou has assured users that all other cold wallets remain secure and that client funds are safe.

The exchange has extended an invitation to teams with expertise in blockchain analytics and fund recovery to assist in tracing the stolen assets. Transparency and security remain top priorities for Bybit, and the company has committed to providing updates as the investigation progresses.

The incident has raised concerns within the cryptocurrency community about the security of digital asset exchanges and the methods employed by attackers to exploit vulnerabilities. Users are advised to remain vigilant and ensure they are following best practices for securing their assets.
