The Yobe State Government has commenced a two-day workshop focused on improving its civil service through a well-structured succession plan and training manual.

The workshop, which started on Thursday in Kano, is designed to prepare civil servants for leadership roles and ensure continuity in service delivery when senior officials exit due to retirement, resignation, or other reasons.

Speaking at the opening, the state Head of Service, Tongan Betara, said the initiative is aimed at building a system that does not lose focus during transitions.

“A strong civil service must be ready to adapt to change without slowing down,” he said. “Succession planning is not just important—it is essential for keeping government work steady, efficient, and responsive.”

He also revealed that the government will introduce rewards and incentives to recognize and encourage dedication, including punctuality, discipline, loyalty, and hard work.

“Going forward, participation in workshops and training will be based on merit and performance,” Betara added, urging participants to take the workshop seriously, calling it a rare chance to grow and contribute meaningfully to the future of governance in Yobe.

  • Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary, Public Service Office, Dr. Bukar Kilo, praised Governor Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to building the capacity of the state’s workforce, describing it as “a source of pride for all citizens.”

Earlier, the Lead Consultant, Dr. Madu Uba of B&G Human Resource and Financial Ltd, thanked the Head of Service for his support and commended the cooperation of civil servants during the planning and execution of the program.

The workshop is expected to produce a practical roadmap for smooth leadership handovers and a stronger work culture across Yobe’s public service.
