The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has formally approved the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from the regional bloc, marking a significant shift in West African diplomacy.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, ECOWAS confirmed that the exit of the three Sahel nations became effective on January 29, 2025. This decision follows months of political tension after military-led governments took power in the countries, leading to their suspension from ECOWAS in January 2024.

Despite efforts to mediate, negotiations failed to prevent the departures. However, ECOWAS emphasized that it remains open to future engagements with the exiting nations.

As part of transitional measures, ECOWAS announced that national passports and identity cards bearing the bloc’s logo will remain valid for citizens of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger. Additionally, goods and services from the three countries will continue to be processed under the ECOWAS Trade Liberalization Scheme (ETLS) and investment policies.

Meanwhile, citizens of the three nations will still enjoy visa-free movement, residence, and establishment rights across the ECOWAS region in accordance with existing protocols. Furthermore, ECOWAS assured that officials from the affected nations will receive full support and cooperation in carrying out their assignments.

However, the regional body stated that these temporary arrangements would remain in place until discussions with the governments of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger determine the next steps for future engagement.
