Erosion Threatens Onitsha-Owerri Road, Drivers Urged to Stay Cautious

Motorists traveling along the Onitsha-Owerri Road are facing a growing hazard as gully erosion has swallowed an entire lane near the Ozubulu end in Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Anambra State, following heavy rainfall earlier this week.

The erosion, which began months ago near the Sea Horse section, has worsened, creating a dangerous situation for drivers, particularly at night. A widely shared social media video captured the extent of the damage, with a concerned voice warning road users to exercise caution.

In response, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Anambra State Command issued a statement on Saturday, calling on drivers to remain vigilant. Margaret Onabe, the Sector Public Education Officer, emphasized the need for careful driving to avoid accidents on the affected road.

FRSC officials, alongside the Ekwusigo Local Government chairman and Tamaic Construction Company, have visited the site to assess the situation and ensure safer passage for motorists. Barricades are being adjusted to guide traffic and reduce risks, while the Federal Comptroller of Works, Dr. Emeka Okpara, joined efforts to evaluate the damage.

“We’re working hard to keep the road safe and prevent crashes,” said FRSC Sector Commander Bridget Asekhaauno. She expressed gratitude to local authorities and the construction company for their swift response and urged drivers to follow safety guidelines at the erosion site.

Meanwhile, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has reiterated his commitment to tackling erosion across Anambra State. Speaking on October 9, 2025, he vowed to ramp up efforts to address environmental challenges, particularly in flood-prone areas like Ogidi in Idemili North.

Soludo stressed the importance of building robust drainage systems and collaborating with federal authorities to protect communities and infrastructure from further erosion damage.

Motorists are advised to drive cautiously and cooperate with safety officials as work continues to address the erosion crisis on the Onitsha-Owerri Road.
