Ex-Soldiers Protest in Abuja Over Unpaid Benefits

Dozens of discharged Nigerian soldiers gathered outside the Ministry of Finance in Abuja on Thursday, demanding the government settle their long-overdue entitlements.

The protest marks a renewed push by the ex-servicemen, who say they’ve been ignored despite earlier promises from authorities.

The group had paused a similar demonstration on August 4 after discussions with officials from the Ministries of Defence and Finance, who pledged to clear the outstanding payments by August 10.

However, the protesters, led by voices like Mama G, expressed frustration over what they call broken promises.

“We trusted them to keep their word, but nothing has been done. That’s why we’re back, and this time, we’re not leaving quietly,” Mama G told reporters, her voice firm with resolve.

For years, retired soldiers have staged protests in Abuja and other cities, citing neglect and delayed benefits. Thursday’s demonstration saw the group chanting and holding signs, drawing attention to their plight.

As of press time, the Ministry of Defence, Defence Headquarters, and Military Pension Board had not responded to the latest protest. The ex-soldiers say they’ll keep pressing until their demands are met.
