Fake cosmetics, banned drugs seized as NAFDAC raids Abuja markets
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has confiscated products valued at over ₦170 million in Abuja, following a clampdown on Chinese-owned supermarkets and cosmetics shops engaged in selling banned and unregistered items.
The enforcement, which took place in Jabi District and Wuse Market, led to the closure of two supermarkets and eight cosmetics outlets.
The action came after NAFDAC received multiple complaints from consumers and carried out undercover checks on the affected businesses.
Officials discovered that the supermarkets stocked food items labeled only in Chinese, a clear violation of Nigeria’s food and drug laws which mandate English labeling.

In Wuse Market, NAFDAC teams uncovered shops where expired cosmetics, whitening supplements, aphrodisiacs and enlargement products were sold without approval.
Some sellers, pretending to be medical professionals, were found marketing products that posed dangerous health risks to unsuspecting customers.
Among the seized items were Wenicks Capsules, Maxman Capsules, Skin Whitening Gummies, Curvy Weight Gain supplements and breast enlargement drugs.
Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said the crackdown was part of ongoing efforts to safeguard public health. She warned that continued use of unregulated products could cause severe health complications, including cancer and organ damage.
She advised consumers to be vigilant, insisting that only NAFDAC-approved products guarantee safety. She also reminded foreign traders to respect Nigerian laws or risk similar sanctions.
