FG Stands Firm: Math Still Mandatory for Uni Entry
The Federal Government has firmly restated that Mathematics is a must for anyone eyeing university or other tertiary spots in Nigeria, reversing last week’s confusion.
In a clear press release Sunday, Ministry of Education spokesperson Boriowo Folashade set the record straight. Last Tuesday, officials had said Math wouldn’t be required for Arts and Humanities courses at universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and innovation hubs across the country.
But the ministry quickly clarified things. “English and Mathematics stay compulsory for all O-Level students,” the statement titled ‘English and Mathematics remain compulsory for all O’Level students. FG clarifies streamlined admission requirements’ declared.
Spokesperson Folashade quoted Education Minister Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa: “Every student must register and take both English and Math in their exams. The new rules just make entry fairer by not blocking bright kids over weak spots in unrelated subjects.”
The changes modernize admissions to match global standards, letting schools pick candidates for programs where a top grade in English or Math isn’t the key. Still, no one skips sitting those core exams.
This push lines up with the government’s goal of opening doors wider, spotting talent in all shapes, and building a stronger workforce. It tweaks entry rules only. not what kids must study.
The ministry warned students, parents, and everyone else: Stick to official channels for the real scoop on policies.
