Governor Mbah Pushes for Political Fix to Free IPOB Leader
Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah has called for a political solution to secure the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who has been held by the Department of State Services since his extradition from Kenya in June 2021.
In a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, shortly after switching from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mbah emphasized that a political approach is the best way to resolve Kanu’s prolonged detention.
He revealed that he raised the issue with the President just a week into his tenure, underscoring his consistent stance on the matter.
“I’ve always believed Kanu’s case should be handled politically,” Mbah said, urging South-East leaders to unite and build a strong case for a political resolution. “We must first agree this is the right path, then work out the details together.”

Mbah’s call echoes sentiments from former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who recently labeled Kanu’s detention “an open sore on our nation’s conscience and a violation of justice,” while demanding his immediate release.
Kanu faces a seven-count charge tied to alleged terrorism, with his case complicated by legal disputes, including ignored court orders for his bail.
The governor stressed the need for collective action among South-East stakeholders to engage federal authorities effectively, expressing hope that a unified approach could bring a lasting solution to the issue
