Investigators Link Excessive Speed and Tyre Failure in Jota Brothers’ Crash
Thousands of mourners gathered recently to pay their final respects to Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward,
and his younger brother André Silva, following their tragic deaths in a high-speed car crash in Spain earlier this week.
The funeral took place at the historic Igreja Matriz de Gondomar, near Porto, where grief-stricken family members,
football stars, political figures, and fans filled the church and surrounding square to capacity.
The two brothers were buried side-by-side in the local cemetery,
their coffins draped in shirts bearing their squad numbers No. 20 for Jota and No. 30 for Silva.
Liverpool teammates Virgil van Dijk and Andy Robertson acted as pallbearers,
joined by several other current and former players, including Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes.
Portugal’s Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Bishop Manuel Linda, and football agent Jorge Mendes were also in attendance.
The emotional ceremony included a rendition of Ave Maria by the same soprano who performed at Jota’s wedding just two weeks earlier.
Crash Under Investigation: Speed and Tyre Failure Suspected
Spanish authorities have confirmed that Diogo Jota was driving the Lamborghini Huracán that crashed and burst into flames on July 3 in Zamora province, northwestern Spain.
According to a preliminary report by the Civil Guard, the sports car was overtaking another vehicle when the rear tyre blew out, likely caused by excessive speed.

Skid marks and debris at the scene support the theory that Jota lost control before the vehicle veered off the highway and ignited.
Investigators ruled out the involvement of any other vehicles, and a final forensic report is now being prepared for the court in Puebla de Sanabria.
Concerns Raised About Road Safety
A road safety expert cited a near-fatal crash involving a 60-year-old woman just eight days earlier at the same stretch of highway,
raising questions about potential design flaws or dangerous conditions.
Officials have not confirmed whether infrastructure issues played a role in the latest tragedy.
Return Journey After Wedding and Surgery
The brothers were reportedly en route to Santander, intending to catch a ferry to England to avoid flying due to Jota’s recent lung surgery.
The journey followed Jota’s June 22 wedding to his long-time partner Rute Cardoso,
with whom he shared three young children. Hours before the crash, Jota posted a video commemorating the ceremony.
Legacy and Tributes
Jota, 28, joined Liverpool in 2020 and quickly became a fan favorite, scoring 65 goals in 182 appearances.
He helped the club secure the FA Cup and League Cup in 2022, and played a key role in their 2025 Premier League title win, the club’s 20th.
Internationally, he earned 49 caps for Portugal and was part of the squad that won the 2025 UEFA Nations League.

His 25-year-old brother André Silva played as a midfielder for FC Penafiel in Portugal’s second tier,
after progressing through FC Porto’s youth system.
Penafiel described André as “a dedicated professional and exemplary teammate,” and declared an official mourning period.
Outpouring of Grief Across the Globe
Condolences poured in from across the football world and beyond. Cristiano Ronaldo, Jurgen Klopp,
UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, and Prince William were among the many who paid tribute.
Liverpool FC opened condolence books at Anfield and observed moments of silence at training grounds.
Fans left flowers and messages at a makeshift memorial outside the stadium, with club insiders suggesting Jota’s No. 20 jersey may be retired in his honor.
