Ivory Coast End World Cup Win Drought

Ivory Coast secured their first World Cup victory in 12 years after a late goal from Amad Diallo earned a 1-0 win over Ecuador in their opening Group E match on Sunday.

The African champions looked set to settle for a draw before Diallo struck in the 90th minute to hand the Elephants a crucial three points at the packed Philadelphia stadium.

The result ended Ivory Coast’s long wait for a World Cup win, with their last victory at the tournament coming against Japan in Brazil in 2014.

Ecuador, backed by a large crowd of supporters dressed in yellow, came close to taking the lead on several occasions. John Yeboah and Alan Minda both struck the crossbar in the first half as the South Americans searched for an opening goal.

Ivory Coast also threatened after the break, with Elye Wahi hitting the woodwork before Seko Fofana tested Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez.

As the match approached full time, Wilfried Singo drove forward from defence and delivered a low cross into the penalty area. Diallo met the pass with a first-time finish to score the winner and silence the Ecuador supporters.

The victory strengthens Ivory Coast’s chances of reaching the World Cup knockout stage for the first time in their history.

The Ivorians will face Germany in their next Group E match in Toronto, while Ecuador will attempt to recover when they take on Curacao.

Ecuador entered the tournament with one of the strongest defensive records in South American qualifying, conceding only five goals in 18 matches. However, they were unable to stop Ivory Coast from claiming all three points in a closely contested encounter.
