Katsina Celebrates 70% Decline in Crime, Banditry, Kidnapping and Castle Rustling

Katsina State has recorded a significant 70% reduction in banditry, kidnapping, and cattle rustling, thanks to a robust community policing strategy and targeted operations against criminal groups, according to state officials.

Dr. Nasir Muazu, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, shared the progress during a security and governance briefing hosted by Governor Dikko Radda. The event aimed to update Katsina indigenes on efforts to restore peace across the state.

Muazu highlighted that the state’s approach, combining community-driven policing with sustained offensives, has pushed many bandits to negotiate peace.

Several notorious bandit leaders, including Audu Lankai from Jibia, Abu Radde from Batsari, Ruga Kachalla from Safana, Ummaru Manore from Danmusa, Sani Muhidingi from Kurfi, and Wada from Musawa, have expressed readiness to surrender their weapons, while Community leaders are also engaging with groups in Sabuwa, Faskari, and Kankara to secure similar peace agreements.

The strategy has led to the rescue of 143 kidnap victims, with 67 freed from Sayaya in Matazu and 76 from Gidan Mantau in Malumfashi. Security forces have dismantled numerous bandit hideouts, forcing criminals to retreat to remote forest areas in neighboring Zamfara and Kaduna states.

As a result, several major roads, once deemed unsafe, are now accessible again. These include the Katsina-Jibia, Katsina-Batsari, Yantumaki-Danmusa, Danmusa-Musawa, Dutsinma-Mararrabar Kankara, Charanchi-Musawa, Safana-Batsari, Runka-Danmusa, and Jibia-Batsari routes.

To sustain these gains, local communities have formed a committee to hold daily discussions and monthly reviews to address security concerns promptly.

Governor Radda’s administration emphasized its commitment to keeping residents informed about ongoing efforts to ensure safety and stability in Katsina.
